MARTIN VAN HOVENBERG EXPIRES AT RAMSEYS.

The Aged Lawyer, Poet and Scholar Died Yesterday - The Funeral Will Occur This Morning

After hovering for several days past between life and death and making a brave fight for life, Martin van Hovenberg expired between 1 and 2 o'clock yesterday morning at Ramseys, Bergen County, whither he had gone on a visit to some friends, and from which he was unable to return, being stricken there with mortal illness.

About a week ago the lower part of his body became paralyzed and gangrene immediately set in, but the sturdy constitution and strong vitality of the man kept death at bay for many hours.

As before stated in these columns Mr. Van Hovenberg was born in Kingston, NY in the year of 1813, his father and mother having married in 1812, and he being born the year following, while his father was serving the American army, as surgeon, in our last war with England. He was consequently in his 87th year at the time of his decease. His oldest survivng contemporary in this city is Real Estate Agent Moses Drury, whom he had known for over sixty-two years. Mr. Drury himself being 85. Among Mr. Van Hovenberg's classmates at the New York university was Bishop Arthur Cleveland Coxe, and he was admitted to the bar in New York upwards of sixty-three years ago.

The funeral, which will be private, will be held this morning at 10:30 o'clock, the Rev. Mr. Twing of St. Mary's P. E. Church, Haledon, of which the deceased was a member, officiating.

Mr. Van Hovenberg was a man of true scholarly achievements and uncommon literary ability, and we append, as a fitting close to this brief notice of his passing away, the following beautiful poem composed by him, entitled, "Dreaming":
